How to BBQ Tomahawk Steak

Tomahawk Steak is a beast of a steak cut. When cooked right it is extremely tender and incredibly delicious. With the right amount of seasoning this steak is guaranteed to leave your mouth watering. We’ve decided to cook ours on the BBQ with a garlic butter, but you choose what seasoning or flavoured butter you want to add.

Our recipe is easy to follow and is going to be great for serving up maybe on your next date night.

Cooking Method

  1. Heat up your BBQ. If you’re using a gas grill it can take up to 20-30 minutes. If you’re using a charcoal grill, you’ll want to wait at least 30 minutes until you see your coals covered in white ash.
Tomahawk Steak is best prepared when it has had time to come to room temperature so whilst you wait for you BBQ you should take your tomahawk steak out of the fridge and leave on the side for 20-30 minutes.
Your grill should be a high heat, about 250 ºC before grilling your steak.
  2. Season you’re tomahawk steak with your favourite seasoning or keep it simple with salt and pepper (leave your salt to the very end so it doesn’t draw out the juices).
Brush a little bit of olive oil or duck fat lightly across the whole of the steak to stop your steak from sticking to the grill.
  3. Add your tomahawk steak to the hot grill and start searing each side for 4-5 minutes. You should have some nice grill marks on each side.
  4. Once, seared, reduce the heat or move the steak to the other side of the grill which should be a lower temperature. Close the lid and cook for 8-10 minutes. For medium rare you’ll want to cook it for 8 minutes, making sure to turn once halfway or cook to an internal temperature of 54 ºC / 130 ºF.
  5. Remove steak from heat and add to a chopping board with a sprinkling of salt and let it rest for 10 minutes. Add your garlic butter and let the butter melt over the steak whilst its resting.
  6. After 10 minutes you can start preparing to serve you steak. Cut ½-1 inches slices making sure to cut against the grain. Add it to a serving tray and add all your favourite sides.

Tomahawk steak is taken from the fore rib. When cut the rib bone is left in which gives the steak it’s unique and notable appearance. Because it is a rib steak, it is closely compared to a rib eye steak due to it’s fat and marbling
