Bacon and sausage – FAQs:
Can you cook bacon from frozen?
You can cook bacon from frozen, however make sure you separate the slices and cook them over a low to medium heat. This means the bacon can defrost and cook evenly without burning. It will take longer to cook than fresh bacon, but the final result remains the same – delicious and crispy. If you’ve frozen thick-cut bacon, avoid cooking from frozen and instead defrost it in the fridge first for the best results. You should also avoid refreezing once thawed.
What is the difference between smoked and unsmoked bacon?
The main difference is within the flavour and curing process. Smoked bacon is cured and then smoked over wood chips, which creates a deep, rich, and often slightly sweet flavour. Unsmoked bacon is cured without the smoking process, which creates a milder, more natural pork taste in comparison. Your choice depends on whether you prefer a bold, smoky profile or a subtle flavour.
How should I store bacon and sausages?
You should store bacon and sausages in the fridge at 0-5°C and consume them by their use-by date to ensure freshness and safety. If you plan to use them after their use-by date, you can also freeze them for longer storage. We recommend tightly sealing them with foil, cling film, or an airtight container to prevent freezer burn and preserve their texture and flavour. When you’re ready to use them, let them defrost in the fridge overnight and cook them within 24 hours for the best results.
What are chipolata sausages?
Chipolata sausages are smaller, thinner pork sausages, usually made with finely ground meat and lightly seasoned with herbs and spices. Their mild flavour and smaller size make them perfect for breakfasts, kid’s meals, or party platters. They’re quick and easy to cook on the grill, in a pan, or in the oven, chipolatas are also great for dishes like pigs in blankets or sausage rolls. At The Village Butchers, our chipolatas are made using high-quality pork or Cumberland for a juicy, flavourful bite every time.
Are your sausages gluten-free?
Yes, some of our sausages are gluten-free, making them the ideal pick for customers with or catering for someone with gluten sensitivities or those following a gluten-free diet. We take the greatest care in sourcing and preparing our gluten-free products, ensuring they’re free from ingredients containing gluten whilst keeping our standard of quality and taste. A popular option to try is our Gluten-Free Pork Sausages, they’re handcrafted using premium cuts of pork and a blend of gluten-free seasonings. If you have specific dietary requirements or questions, feel free to contact us directly, we’re happy to help you find the right product to suit your needs.
Can you reheat sausages?
Reheating sausages, when previously cooked thoroughly and have been stored correctly, is perfectly safe. Your sausages should have been cooled and refrigerated within two hours and used within maximum 3 days. When reheating, ensure they are all piping hot all the way through before serving, the internal temperature should be at least 75°C. You can reheat sausages in the microwave, oven, or in a pan on the hob. We recommend avoiding reheating more than once, as repeated cooling and reheating can affect both safety and taste.
